Intestinal Barrier in chronic bowel diseases
Chronic intestinal failure is a rare disease entity that can be caused by a loss of bowel length (short bowel syndrome, SBS) or by functional disorders of the mucosa or motility, especially in the small intestine. Irreversible chronic intestinal failure is often accompanied by the need for total parenteral nutrition (PN). An essential part of the therapy is to restore part of the functionality of the residual intestine and thus improve the patient's quality of life.
